About

I Didn't Study Expat Life
in a Textbook.
I'm Living It.

I'm Trevor Brown. Licensed therapist, expat, and the person behind The Other Therapy.

Trevor Brown, therapist

I'm an American therapist living in Istanbul, married to a Turkish woman, raising a daughter between two cultures. I came here in my early twenties, planned to stay a week, and stayed a year. That year changed the direction of my life.

I worked as a tour guide, met people from everywhere, and got fascinated by what made each person tick: the gap between who they showed the world and who they were underneath. That fascination led me to psychology.

The Path

How I Came to Do This Work

I trained at Naropa University, a contemplative-based program in Boulder, Colorado, where I learned to listen to people underneath the words they use. I spent five years in private practice in Denver, working with individuals, couples, and families. Then I moved back to Istanbul, married, and transitioned my practice online, working with the people who needed me most: the ones living between worlds.

That background shapes how I work. I'm not interested in giving you tools to manage symptoms and sending you on your way. I want to understand what's driving the problem: the patterns you've built, the feelings you've learned to avoid, and the ways you get in your own way without realizing it.

Psychodynamic

Trained in approaches that go underneath the surface, including ISTDP. Not managing symptoms, but understanding and resolving the patterns driving them.

Relational

Specialized in couples work and dynamics between people. Trained in PACT and Relational Life Therapy.

Direct

I don't sit back and nod. I share what I see in real time, ask the questions you've been avoiding, and push the work forward.

Who I Work With

People Living Between Worlds

Expats and Digital Nomads

People who left their home country by choice and are dealing with what came with that decision: loneliness, identity shifts, anxiety, or the sense that something's off.

Remote Workers

People whose work lets them live anywhere, but who've discovered that freedom and rootlessness sometimes go hand-in-hand.

NGO Workers and Government Officials

People on assignment, often moving every few years, who carry the cumulative weight of constant adjustment.

Intercultural Couples and Families

Couples navigating the daily friction that comes with different cultural backgrounds, not just the big conflicts, but the small misunderstandings that erode closeness.

Working With Me

What It's Like

Direct

I won't spend weeks on small talk. I'll tell you what I see, including the ways you might be getting in your own way. Most clients tell me this is what makes the work feel different.

Uncovering

This work focuses less on what happened to you and more on what you're doing now that keeps you stuck. That means facing things you've been avoiding.

Yours

I'm a catalyst. I can point you in the direction I think you need to go, but only you can take the steps. The work is yours. I make sure we're not avoiding the parts that matter.

Built for Expat Life

No long onboarding. No wasted sessions explaining what life abroad is like. I already know. We get into the actual work from the start.

Trevor's demeanor, thoughtful listening skills, and valuable questions empowered me to speak candidly. He was able to reframe and demystify things that I believed to be absolutes.

Since I started with Trevor, I've made huge progress. He strikes the perfect balance between empathy and challenging my old beliefs. I wouldn't be the same person today without him.
